A close encounter with a Velvet Ant, or “Cow Killer” Contrary to its name, this is a wingless wasp. Velvet Ants are solitary and search out other nests to lay her eggs in, such as ground-nesting bees. She will deposit one egg near each larva in the host nest, which will then be consumed by the developing Velvet Ant after it hatches. Just like many other wasps and bees, the adults feed off of nectar. These can leave you in pain with their sting, so observe… but don’t touch! #brazosbenstatepark #t
