Milkweed has evolved for centuries to live with lots of insects. Last week I posted a video of bright orange Oleander aphids all over my swamp milkweed. And one week I only have two stems that have aids on them, and I have evidence of beneficial insects devouring them. I also at the same time, have a big beautiful monarch caterpillar living off the same plant. This is what a great ecosystem looks like. In future seasons this process is gonna happen even faster because now the beneficial insects

How to Grow and Care for Common Milkweed

Monarch butterflies rely on milkweed but this plant is most commonly found in the ditch along roadsides where the county sprays poison for weed control. Often I’ve seen milkweed sprayed quite often and there is very little habitat for monarch butterflies outside of the milkweed. Pasture and roads are pretty hostile for such a fragile species so I’m moving the seeds I find to more wild spaces. #Milkweed #monarchbutterflies | Michael Ridge

It's time to chop down Tropical Milkweed! 🦋 Unlike native milkweeds, tropical milkweed does not naturally die back in the winter. Gardeners must mimic this natural cycle by cutting tropical milkweed to the ground after the migration periods have ceased in order to prevent Monarchs from hanging around when they naturally need to be on their way. Tropical Milkweed MUST be cut down after the fall butterfly migration in San Antonio. We also advise another heavy prune after the spring migration. A m

Common milkweed, scientifically known as Asclepias syriaca, is a native wildflower that plays a vital role in the life cycle of monarch butterflies. Its tall stems, clusters of pinkish-purple flowers, and distinct seed pods make it a standout in any garden or natural area. 🌸🌱But the beauty of common milkweed goes beyond its appearance. This incredible plant serves as a host plant for monarch butterfly larvae, providing them with a crucial food source. The leaves of the milkweed contain toxins
