Pros/cons of floating vs submersible stock tank de-icers
Jan 20, 2011 · I have a Rubbermaid tank and the heater screws into the bottom of the tank, I have used 2 of them in 6 years. I had to replace the first one because my yearling TWH decided me wanted to take a bath in the tank and squashed it. Other than that i love it. I would be worried about them wanting to play with the ones that float on top.

Dec 12, 2009 · I just use a metal rod (stuck into the ground about 5") with a metal clip to attach a piece of copper wire just long enough to reach to the bottom of the trough. I also use an extension, I use a heavy duty-rated outdoor one. I also cover the outlet and where it plugs into the heater cord with a plastic bag to protect it from ice and snow.

Jan 23, 2012 · The tub is rubber which is also and insulator. Ground the metal water lines in your building to be sure they are not carrying stray voltage. Cows usally won't drink if there is stray voltage, so I am guessing it is all fine. Please Don't ever put a ground rod in the ground and leave 6" sticking out of the ground.

The tank had a woodstove built into it. You had to go inside the building to access the door on the stove. The wood was piled up inside there.
