So far I have bought 3 adapters from different brands and all of them have stopped working after a week of use. The display stays blank with a "No signal" message.

But the advantage of one or the other relies on your monitor. A 4k monitor will be the same over Thunderbolt as it is over HDMI. cababah.

But be aware that there are many "versions" of HDMI cables, and if you have one, it may not be "adequate enough". If I was buying a new cable, I'd look for HDMI "2.0" and "high speed" on the packaging.

Feb 22, 2023 · Cable Matters USB-C adapter 201388-A, delivered from Amazon with .120 firmware LG C2 42" Yiwentec 8K HDMI Cable No issues with getting 4k120hz from a HP Windows Laptop with 12th Gen Intel CPU with XE GPU with the same adapter and cable. With the Macbook however can't get anything other than max 60hz listed in refresh rate :/

Otherwise the HDMI port definitely passes audio. Haven't tried any DRM'd movies to test HDCP compliance but I'm guessing it'd work in both scenarios.

Bandwidth: 225MHz / 6.75 Gbps per channel - 1440p 60Hz requires ≈ 241 MHz / 7.23 Gbps (includes 8b/10b overhead) Even if it was a bandwidth problem, it should connect and let you choose 1080p.
