What is the difference between margin and padding in CSS?

With this in mind, a good rule of thumb is to use margin when you want to space an element in relationship to other elements on the wall, and padding when you're adjusting the appearance of the element itself. Margin won't change the size of the element, but padding will make the element bigger 1.
