Feb 21, 2013 · Just make sure none of the gaps on the rings are lined up with each other. Set the first ring, turn the next one so the gap is 120 degrees off from the first one and turn the last one 120 degrees from that one.

The ring gaps should be staggered 120 degrees apart. Pay special attention to the oil ring; the two scraper rings should be staggered one inch from the gap of the expansion ring (one gap to the right of the expansion ring gap, the other to the left of the expansion ring gap).

Sep 7, 2010 · Its there to provide the proper lubrication of the rings and allow them a surface to mate to. With poor honing or a cylinder glaze the rings will not seal or break in correctly since the cylinder walls will not retain oil correctly without the pattern they allow it past the rings.
