Hurricane Hazel was the deadliest, second-costliest, and most intense hurricane of the 1954 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm killed at least 469 people in Haiti before it struck the United States near the border between North and South Carolina as a Category 4 hurricane.

Hurricane Hazel was the deadliest and costliest hurricane of the 1954 hurricane season (Figure 1) and is the strongest and only Category 4 hurricane to ever hit the North Carolina coast. The first indication that a tropical cyclone had formed came on October 5, 1954 about 50 miles east of the island of Grenada in the Windward Islands.

Because of the storm's rapid movement, it traveled northward through the United States to areas that were not prepared for such an event.

The hurricane turned northward and crossed the southeastern Bahamas on the 13th, followed by a northwestward turn on the 14th. Hazel turned north and accelerated on October 15, making landfall as a Category 4 hurricane near the North Carolina-South Carolina border.

On October 15, 1954, Hurricane Hazel made its devastating landfall near Myrtle Beach, SC. Hazel had already ravaged islands in the Caribbean and Bahamas and would go on to wreak a path of destruction up the eastern United States and into Canada.
