Although it is only about 40 miles (64 km) longer than US-50, it serves more populated areas and, in fact, follows what had been US-50's routing until it was moved to follow Interstate 70 (I-70) in 1976.

Taking US 6 is definitely faster, under normal conditions, if you're heading from SLC to Green River. (I've measured it at about 35 minutes faster, and that's assuming you'd cut across US50 from Scipio to Salina to connect from I-15 to I-70.)

Sep 3, 2023 · SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — U.S. Route 6 is closed in both directions at mile marker 228, according to Utah Highway Patrol. Eastbound traffic is being diverted to U.S. Route 89 into Sanpete County and westbound traffic has been diverted to U.S. Route 191 into Duchesne County, according to UHP.

U.S. Route 40 begins at I-80 at Silver Creek Junction in Silver Summit, traveling south-southeast as a full freeway in a broad valley northeast of Park City.At the south end of the valley, Jordanelle Reservoir comes into view and US-40 continues south high on the slope above its western shore while Utah State Route 248 climbs away to the east on the slope overlooking the northern shore.
