Jun 16, 2022 · Of course Thunderbolt is better than the HDMI port (for one, you can run up to 6k over Thunderbolt, HDMI on Macs is only 4k capable). But the advantage of one or the other relies on your monitor. A 4k monitor will be the same over Thunderbolt as it is over HDMI.

Oct 28, 2013 · If the Thunderbolt->HDMI cable supports audio through Thunderbolt alone, then you're fine. Otherwise the HDMI port definitely passes audio. Haven't tried any DRM'd movies to test HDCP compliance but I'm guessing it'd work in both scenarios. I switched to the native HDMI port just so I don't have to use my adapter that can break.

Jun 24, 2023 · I would probably go with a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, which would not need an adapter. But, yes, you would lose a USB-C/thunderbolt port, when an HDMI cable should also give you the best image just as good as the DisplayPort connection. Your choice.

Nov 13, 2024 · In any case, Thunderbolt 5 will be useful if you want to do more than what Thunderbolt 3/4 can do (like 8K120 or two 6K120) but the display modes that Apple specifies as the max supported by Macs are only 4K240 or 8K60 and do not require Thunderbolt 5 unless you want to connect more than one of them but Apple says you can only connect one of them.

Jan 28, 2021 · Thunderbolt 1 and 2 ports are also Mini Display Ports, so really no reason to have a TB2 to HDMI cable. I also have a few of the dongles around, but prefer the cables as it is one less connection that has to be made and one less thing to fail.

Feb 22, 2023 · Cable Matters USB-C adapter 201388-A, delivered from Amazon with .120 firmware LG C2 42" Yiwentec 8K HDMI Cable No issues with getting 4k120hz from a HP Windows Laptop with 12th Gen Intel CPU with XE GPU with the same adapter and cable. With the Macbook however can't get anything other than max 60hz listed in refresh rate :/

Feb 22, 2023 · Depends on the dock. A USB-C dock will probably only have 2 lanes of HBR3. You need a Thunderbolt 3 dock with Titan Ridge (supports DisplayPort 1.4 - 4 lanes of HBR3) or a Thunderbolt 4 dock. Older Thunderbolt 3 docks with Alpine Ridge only support DisplayPort 1.2.
