Penaeus monodon, commonly known as the giant tiger prawn, [1][2] Asian tiger shrimp, [3][4] black tiger shrimp, [5][6] and other names, is a marine crustacean that is widely reared for food. Penaeus monodon was first described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1798.

Penaeus monodon was one of six species of penaeid shrimp transported to Hawaii for aquaculture and research between 1978-1991. Some individuals escaped from culture ponds during flooding, but no populations are thought to be established (Eldredge 1994).

Penaeus monodon is found at depths from 0 to 110 m, inhabiting bottom mud and sand. Giant tiger prawn live in brackish, estuarine (juveniles) and marine (adults) environments (FAO, 1980). In its natural range, P. monodon frequents water temperatures of 18–34.5 oC and salinities of 5–45 ppt (Branford, 1981; Chen, 1990).

Giant tiger prawns are na­tive to the coasts of the Ara­bian penin­sula and the Pa­cific and In­dian Ocean coasts of Aus­tralia, In­done­sia, south and south­east Asia, and South Africa. They were ac­ci­den­tally in­tro­duced to the United States off the coast of South Car­olina in 1988, by an un­ex­pected re­lease from an aqua­cul­ture cen­ter.

In general, Penaeus monodon is the most prominent farmed crustacean product in international trade and has driven a significant expansion in aquaculture in many developing countries in Asia. Market prices during its early development were quite good due to little competition and strong demand from the Japanese market.
