Oil pan almost made a mess of my skull. Missed by inches. Pinned under the car until some family members got to me and pulled up on the fender enough for me to get out. Use a jack stand.

These jacks and half jacks are flimsy, temporary and designed for minimal use to allow you to change a wheel at the roadside.

May 22, 2022 · Always use jack stands when possible. Scissor jacks are perfectly fine , use on a flat surface wheels chocked/parking brake on. Just don't use them. It sucks having to use them once but then to have to use them twice to lift up both sides of the car. It's pretty simple; I don't "rely on" any type of jack, ever.

A bottle jack is even worse than a scissor jack for bad locations. It won't twist like a scissor jack but it will tip over on you in the blink of an eye. I don't consider them safe for automotive use at all. I keep a cheap walmart floor jack in the back of all my vehicles. They usually have something in a plastic case for around $30.
