Nov 18, 2008 · Chain length surly will depend on chain ring size, cassette size and chainstay length (bottom bracket to axle), unless you can write a program that allows you to input all these sizes and measurements and then factor in free play allowances I don't see how you could have a one program fits all.

Nov 29, 2024 · The waxed chain I ordered has two more links than the chain that came with the bike. I have a Shimano Ultegra 12S cassette (Shimano Ultegra Di2 RD-R8150 12s). I ordered the correct chain by their part number and description. I have counted the 12 gears. The box the chain came in is labeled Shimano Ultegra 12S.

Jun 29, 2019 · AND - at the shop : I have a superb home-made tool for use when you have an existing chain .... it's a long thin piece of timber about 3" wide and longer than 118 chain links that has 2 battens screwed along the long edges to form a "channel) - at one end of the channel there are 2 nails side by side.

If you feel a cross check is necessary, use a second calculator (bit like checking a second or third weather forecast). Check current 'stock'. Order (silver/black, double butted or plain gauge, (brass) nipple length.

Sep 3, 2018 · A tight chain is in contact with half of the teeth on the chainring, and half of the teeth on the sprocket, plus you need the chainstay length above and below. If you increase the sprocket by 4 teeth, the half of the sprocket that's in contact with the chain has 2 more teeth, and everything else is the same.

Jun 13, 2017 · If the OP's chain is the length the image implies on large/large then it will be fine on small/small - the new cassette is only one tooth smaller. As for capacity (assuming 50-34 chainset), 11-28 plus 50-34 capacity is well within spec at 33 and a 28t largest sprocket is an entirely 'normal' cassette to use.

Dec 29, 2014 · I understand the spoke length varies depending on how you lace the wheel, and I'm assuming that my rear wheel was laced 3x (spoke moves over 3 holes from hub to rim, yes my terminology is way off!) And the calculator is throwing out measurements that are way off the spokes that I have previously removed from my wheel (5+ mm).

Apr 29, 2013 · Was going to post the same thing. What Machinehead call 1 link is what I would call 2 links. My latest chain was purchased as a 114 link one not 57 link. To be honest, in the time it takes to measure the chain stay then go and put the details into the chain calculator you could use the big to big +2 links method and have the chain fitted.

Apr 30, 2024 · This is similar to the way Campagnolo says the chain length should be determined, btw: they go small-small and the return section of chain should be x mm away from the chain on the tension pulley: i.e. they are seeking to provide a guide by cage orientation as opposed to: large-large and at least one (inch) link, and then cut the chain there.
