Wa-na-ta (Dakota: Wánataŋ which translates as One who charges, or Charger) or Waneta was a chief of the Yanktonai, a tribe of the Dakota. Chief Wa-na-ta, also known as Wanata and Wanataan I, was born around 1795. The Yanktonai were located near the St. Peter River, which is today known as the Minnesota River, in present day Minnesota.

Wanatah is a town in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,048 at the 2010 census. The first settlements were made at Wanatah in the 1850s when the railroad was extended to that point. [4] . Wanatah was platted in 1865. [5] . It was named for Wanata, a Native American leader. [6]

APPEAL from the Circuit Court of the United States for the Southern District of New York. This was a libel against the 'Wanata,' to recover $23,000 damages caused by her colliding with the pilot-boat 'Josiah Johnson' about nine o'clock P.M., on the 6th of March, 1869.

Wanata is a chief of the Yanktona, a tribe of the Sioux, or Dacota Indians, whose proper residence is on the waters of the River St. Peter, which empties into the Mississippi, a short distance below the falls of St. Anthony.

Wanata was a very influential chief, as evidenced by his ability to lead his tribes' 1,300 warriors into battle. At age 18, Wanata was accustomed to the ways of war and fought under his father Red Thunder (then the chief of the Yanktonai) against the Americans in the War of 1812.

GREAT PLAINS - Waneta was a War Chief of the Cut Head Band of Yanktonai Dakota, as was his father, Red Thunder, before him. Red Thunder’s eldest daughter, Ista Totowin (Blue Eyes Woman) or Helen Elizabeth Winona (b. 1781, d. unknown), was married to the English Indian Agent, Robert Dickson.

The district court was of opinion that the Wanata was wholly at fault, and entered a decree against her, awarding the libellants $16,000 on account of the loss of the pilot boat, clothing, and interest, and $305.27 as costs.

THE WANATA is a case that was decided by the Supreme Court of the United States on November 26, 1877. The case was argued before the court on November 8, 1877. In an 8-0 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the ruling of the lower court. The case originated from the New York Southern U.S. District Court.

The Wanata sailed from Liverpool on 10th June 1852 and arrived in Melbourne on 4th October 1852. During the voyage Patrick’s two daughters died and a new daughter, Johanna was born. There were 52 deaths among the 782 passengers on this journey.
