Holbein's portrait of Sir Thomas More was painted in 1527, when More held the office of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. The picture, a half-length portrait, shows More in three-quarter profile seated against a shallow backdrop of green drapes.

Humanist scholar and author of Utopia, which aimed to encourage the reform of English politics. The dialogues satirised European society and included the famous description of the newly discovered island of Utopia - a name derived from the Greek for 'nowhere'.

This portrait shows five generations of the family of the scholar and Lord Chancellor of England Sir Thomas More. It presents a fiction by showing living and dead family members together in the same room.

Sir Thomas More (1478–1535) sat for this portrait at the height of his political career, shortly before he was promoted to lord chancellor, the highest-ranking office in Tudor England.

Next year, he began a painting of Sir Thomas More and his family. A preparatory sketch for the original survives, but the painting itself was destroyed by fire in the eighteenth century. Fortunately, paintings which were created based on it by Rowland Lockey in the late sixteenth century, survive.
