Samuel Lee (14 May 1783 – 16 December 1852) was an English Orientalist, born in Shropshire; professor at Cambridge, first of Arabic and then of Hebrew language; was the author of a Hebrew grammar and lexicon, and a translation of the Book of Job.

In 1819 he became professor of Arabic, and in 1831 regius professor of Hebrew. A profound linguist, he made a study of the Maori language with Hongi, Waikato and Kendall, and successfully produced the first Grammar and Vocabulary of the New Zealand Language (1820). Lee died on 16 Dec 1852.

Samuel Lee went on to learn Ethiopic, Abbyssinian, and Malay. The latter he learned in two months during Christmas break. Lee was asked why it was so easy for him to learn languages.

Mr Samuel Lee, in his untiring zeal for the works of Oriental learning which relate to religion, has found the Syriac translation of the book in question. LEE, Samuel, an English scholar, born at Longnor, May 14, 1783, died at Barley, Dec. 16, 1852. He was educated at a charity school, and at the age of 12 was apprenticed to a carpenter. While laboring at his craft he mastered the Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Chaldaic, and Syriac languages.
