The Player's House is the home of the main character. The default name for the male character is Nate. The default name for the female character is Katie. There are two floors to this house.

The Old Mansion is visited in Chapter 4, where the player has to find the Yo-kai Watch upgrade parts and befriends Baku. As well, the mansion is visited during Start the Yo-kai Party! and Yo-kai Banquet , where the player battles Chirpster in the latter quest.

Yo-kai Watch revolves around befriending Yo-kai that are haunting the city, which are based on traditional yōkai, but often with clever twists. If one befriends a Yo-kai, they get their Yo-kai Medal, an object that allows one to summon Yo-kai. With these, they can summon Yo-kai to either fight other Yo-kai, befriend others, or solve everyday tasks.

The battle system in Yo-kai Watch 2 is almost identical to the first game, but with the new "M Skill" and "Poking" abilities. Much like its predecessor, Yo-kai Watch 2 is an open world role-playing video game, where the player controls player character Nathan Adams or Katie Forester.

Players assume the role of Nathan or Katie, as he or she travels around town searching for and befriending peaceful Yo-kai, battling hostile Yo-kai, and solving problems caused by mischievous Yo-kai.
