Aoba Castle (青葉 城, Aoba-jō) is a Japanese castle located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Throughout the Edo period, Aoba Castle was home to the Date clan, daimyō of Sendai Domain. The castle was also known as Sendai-jō (仙台城) or as Gojō-rō (五城楼). In 2003, the castle ruins were designated a National Historic Site. [1]

Aoba Castle (青葉城, Aobajō) was built in 1600 by the powerful feudal lord Date Masamune. Because of considerations for the castle's defense, Masamune chose to locate his fortifications on Mount Aoba, 100 meters above the town below.

Jun 23, 2023 · Sendai Castle, also known as the Aoba Castle, was completed in 1602 when it had quite vast grounds. The mountain castle, situated at its east with an altitude of 130 meters, was built against a cliff and had Tatsunokuchi Valley (竜の口渓谷) at its south.

Located in the Aobayama Hills, Sendai Castle Honmaru was a natural fortress utilizing the natural terrain consisting of a cliff wall that looks over the Hirose River to the east, a mountain forest in the west called “the back woods”, and the Tachinokuchi valley on the south side.

Also known as Aoba Castle, the ruins occupy a prominent hilltop location to the west of Sendai City. Most of the castle buildings were destroyed towards the end of the 19th century when the feudal Edo Period ended.
