About the New Headquarters Commemorative Plaque. On Nov. 1, 1985, CIA employees participated in the CIA New Headquarters Building (NHB) Cornerstone Ceremony. To prepare for the ceremony, employees were asked to suggest documents and other materials that were sealed within the NHB cornerstone.

Although the wall was "first conceived as a small plaque to recognize those from the CIA who died in Southeast Asia, the idea quickly grew to a memorial for Agency employees who died in the line of duty."

Just inside the main entrance of CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia is a white marble wall with a field of stars etched into the cold, hard stone. It is the most sacred space on the Agency’s compound. Each star memorializes a life lost in the line of duty, a sacrifice on behalf of our nation.

The stars carved in marble at the CIA Headquarters Lobby are a simple, silent memorial to employees who have died in the line of duty. Today, and every day, we honor the brave CIA officers who came before us.
