Dec 21, 2024 · Thomas More (born February 7, 1478, London, England—died July 6, 1535, London; canonized May 19, 1935; feast day June 22) was an English humanist and statesman, chancellor of England (1529–32), who was beheaded for refusing to accept King Henry VIII as head of the Church of England.

Sir Thomas More PC (7 February 1478 – 6 July 1535), venerated in the Catholic Church as Saint Thomas More, [2] was an English lawyer, judge, [3] social philosopher, author, statesman, amateur theologian, and noted Renaissance humanist. [4] He also served Henry VIII as Lord High Chancellor of England from October 1529 to May 1532. [5]

Thomas More has been widely remembered as a man of tremendous integrity, and he has since been described as a martyr and canonized a saint. Pope Leo XIII beatified More in 1886, and he was canonized by Pope Pius XI on May 19, 1935.
