The Bugatti Type 40 was a family of grand tourers that was introduced in 1926. The Type 40 was available in tourer or roadster body styles, and was powered by a 1.5L inline four engine that sent drive to the rear wheels via a manual transmission. A 1.6L-engined version of the Type 40 known as the Type 40A was also offered in 1930.

The engine was a modified version of the Type 37 racer launched in 1925, as were the brakes and the gearbox and drivetrain were derived from the Type 38.
