Overnight water drops helped stop the spread of a huge wildfire churning through rugged mountains north of Los Angeles.

The fire threat remains critical in Southern California, where thousands of residents were under evacuation orders Wednesday as fire crews battled the out-of-control Hughes Fire near Castaic, a suburb in the foothills and mountains of northern Los Angeles County.

A new wildfire was reported today at 7:29 p.m. in Los Angeles County. The wildfire has been burning on private land. At this time, the containment status is unknown and the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

The city's artists and art collectors are mourning what could amount to billions of dollars in irreplaceable art that went up in flames.
