The Spituk Monastery was built in the 11th century. The monastery, about eight km from Leh in Jammu and Kashmir, was constructed to help develop an exemplary religious community in Ladakh.

One of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh ... the monastery is home to 60 monks. Founded in the 1440s, Lingshed Monastery is also known as Kumbum which means ‘A Hundred Thousand Images’.

Located around 50 kilometres south-east of the capital Leh, Takthok is the only monastery in Ladakh that belongs to the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism with direct links to Padmasambhava.
