If you want a cavern experience off the beaten path, this one is for you. The Cal State guide was very good with his knowledge of the area and the caverns. Full review by Gary G

Is this suitable for small children? I would like to take a family trip when my kids are 5 and 7.

Yes, I'd say so. The walk/hike to the cave from the visitor center is not very long and a gradual easy incline. Great views over the edge so HOLD their hands! The guide we had was in no hurry and let the group dictate the speed of the hike and how in depth his explanations were based on group/individual interest. I am a photographer and he happily paused or let me linger to get shot without spectators in foreground. I'd say yes for sure.
The website describes the hike in as strenuous... what is it like? Can you provide details. Can't be too long, what is the elevation gain?

The hike in was about 1/2 mile and mostly level with a few stairs and up places. Barely moderate as done at reasonable pace stopping to look at surroundings. Inside there are stairs down as enter cave but done at a slow pace. One place inside with stairs going up but no rush as admiring cave. In cave about a mile at a slow pace. Then go thru door locks to second cave and a few steps to exit. Then walk back along same path. About 2 hour tour and 2 mile walk done leisurely. Very little elevation gain as starting very close to elevation at mouth of cave.
I know reservations are needed, but what months are the caverns open?
A:
I believe they are open all year but only on weekends and holidays except Christmas, Thanksgiving etc! Caution is needed driving there in the summer due to the desert summer heat.
The caverns are comfortable all the time. My suggestion would be to avoid the summer months as traveling to them through the desert could be an issue. The only way to see the caverns ā¦
The caverns are comfortable all the time. My suggestion would be to avoid the summer months as traveling to them through the desert could be an issue. The only way to see the caverns is with a guided tour. The groups are small and advance booking is necessary. The wait when I went in February was 4 or 5 weeks so plan it well in advance.
