It is part of the Unione dei comuni Città Territorio-Val Vibrata. Colonnella is located in the Val Vibrata. To the north it borders the municipality of Monteprandone in region of Le Marche, to the east, the municipality of Martinsicuro, to the south, Alba Adriatica and to the west with the municipalities of Controguerra and Corropoli.
